o Reston-Based Resonate Raises More Than $20M; Revolution Leads Round


Reston, Va. -- Resonate, a Reston-based developer of audience targeting technology, said on Wednesday it has raised more than $20 million in its second round of funding, led by Revolution Growth, the DC-based investment firm created by AOL co-founder Steve Case and Wizards and Capitals owner Ted Leonsis. Previous backers Greycroft Partners and iNovia Capital also took part in the round, which the company will use, in part, to launch a new big data tool for political campaigns and corporate marketers. Leonsis will join the company's board and help lead its new efforts. "Resonate is ready to deliver something that Twitter and Facebook cannot: values-based insights into why consumers buy what they buy, and why voters back the candidates they support," said Leonsis. Founded in 2008, Resonate uses an array of online surveys and data analytics tools to help companies better target their ad campaigns based on otherwise unidentifiable consumer values. The company also raised $5 million in 2010 in a round led by iNovia Capital and Greycroft Partners.

o Reuters: Reston-Based LightSquared to Cut 45% of Staff

Reston, Va. -- One week after having its plans for a nationwide mobile broadband network rejected by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Reston-based LightSquared plans to cut 45% of its staff -- nearly 150 employees -- Reuters reported. In a statement, the company called the cuts "prudent and necessary cost savings," adding that it "remains committed to managing its core business operations, serving the more than 300,000 government, public safety and commercial users of its satellite service." The FCC quashed plans for the network last week following a report by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) that found the company's technology would harm GPS signals. Sanjiv Ahuja, LightSquared's chairman and CEO, said the company had spent nearly $4 billion on the project, which initially had been approved by the FCC in 2005 and amended in 2010.

Reston, Va. -- Clarity Solution Group, an Illinois-based provider of data and analytics tools and consulting services, said it has opened a new facility in Reston, where the company is basing its product development organization and emerging technologies practice. Andy Souders, Clarity's newly hired CTO, will lead the facility, which the company is calling its "Innovation Center." The company, which also has an office in Texas, said the move expands its geographic footprint. "The Northern Virginia region offers a great talent pool," said CEO John Papadia. o Reston-Based WBB Lands Investment, Merges with Rockville's NetStar-1

Reston, Va. -- Whitney, Bradley and Brown (WBB), a Reston-based management consulting firm, said on Wednesday it has landed a "significant" investment from private equity firm Lake Capital, and merged with Rockville-based NetStar-1, which provides management consulting services to federal agencies. Lake Capital initially invested in NetStar-1 in 2007. Financial terms of the latest funding were not disclosed. The combined company, which will continue to operate under the WBB brand and remain headquartered in Reston, will have more than $130 million in annual revenue and 500 employees. Key clients include the Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, Veterans Health Administration, Department of Justice and Office of Personnel Management. WBB head William McMullen will become president and CEO of the combined company, with Kevin Rowe, the former president and CEO of NetStar-1, becoming chairman. "We are excited about the increased scale and reach within our target markets that this merger brings us," said McMullen. "This will enable us to aggressively grow our business by positioning ourselves more competitively on substantial governmental initiatives and prime contract awards."

o DC-Based Vox Media Launches Video Game Hub on The Verge

Washington, DC -- Vox Media, the DC-based media company known until late last year as SB Nation, said it has launched a new video game hub, featuring breaking news, features and reviews. The content is currently available as part of The Verge, the company's recently launched technology site, but is expected to launch as a standalone site later this year. "As I told you back at the beginning of January, gaming coverage was coming to our network in a very real (and frankly sexy) manner via the recently formed supergroup of Vox Games," wrote Joshua Topolsky, editor-in-chief of The Verge and former editor-in-chief of AOL's Engadget.
