Cambridge, Mass. – Zipcar, the Cambridge-based car sharing network, has led a $13.7 million first round of venture capital in Wheelz, a Palo Alto-based provider of peer-to-peer car sharing services that targets college campuses. Wheelz offers instant sign up and easy set up for car owners, as well as instant, automated DMV checks to ensure responsible drivers. The company also offers an iPhone app that enables reservations and unlocking, without key exchanges. Fontinalis Partners also invested in Wheelz’ first round.

o Hyannis-based Acquires Salt Lake City-based LiteTouch

Hyannis, Mass. -- Savant Systems, a Hyannis-based provider of Apple-based home automation and commercial control systems, has acquired LiteTouch, a Salt Lake City-based developer of systems for residential and commercial lighting control. Terms between the two privately held firms were not disclosed. LiteTouch was founded in the late 1970s. Savant said the acquisition provides it with a well established lighting control platform, as well as a broad range of keypad offerings to complement Savant’s iOS user interface solutions for residential and commercial control applications.

o Cumberland-based Collegium Raises $22.5 Million in Second Round

Cumberland, R.I. -- Collegium Pharmaceutical, a Cumberland-based company focused on the development of treatments for chronic pain, announced on Wednesday it has raised $22.5 million in its second round of venture capital, which was led by Longitude Capital and Skyline Ventures. Founded in 2003, Collegium is developing an oral drug delivery technology that provides extended release delivery, tamper resistant properties, and flexible dose administration options. Other investors in the company include Frazier Healthcare Ventures and Boston Millennia Partners.

o Roundarch Acquired by Aegis Group

Boston -- Aegis Group, a London-based media and digital communications group, announced on Wednesday it has signed agreement to acquire Roundarch, a digital agency with offices in Boston, Chicago, Denver and New York. With 250 employees, Roundarch specializes in designing and building digital services for large clients such as Avis, HBO, Bloomberg Sports, Motorola and the US Air Force. Its services include strategy, design, development and outsourcing across digital channels including web, mobile and social media.

o LiveClips Names Brian Kalinowski as COO

Stamford, Conn. -- LiveClips, the Stamford-based provider of a service for delivering video clips to sports and fantasy league fans over the Internet and mobile devices, has named bas its COO. Kalinowski joined LiveClips after nearly five years as executive vice president with WWE Interactive. Jack Loop, the acting COO, has transitioned to the role of vice president, sales and marketing. Last week, LiveClips announced it raised about $2.2 million in venture capital over the past two months from Advantage Capital Partners, Ironwood Capital Connecticut, and Connecticut Innovations. LiveClips’ video clipping technology ingests live feeds from games and creates, digitizes and delivers searchable video clips of every play within 10 seconds of live action. Founded in 2008, the company said it created 83,000 discrete video clips, of which 6,887 were distributed to fans who viewed them over 65 million times during the 2011 BCS college football season.
