Reston, Va. -- The Internet Society, a Reston- and Switzerland-based organization focused primarily on Internet policy, has named Kathryn Brown as its new CEO. Brown, who will work out of Reston, succeeds Lynn St. Amour, who announced in February that she would be stepping down at the conclusion of her contract. "The search for a new CEO was both global and comprehensive," said Bob Hinden, chair of the Internet Society's board of trustees. "Kathy is a proven leader with in-depth knowledge of global Internet governance policy and has a keen understanding of the many stakeholders debating the future of the Internet." Brown most recently served as a senior advisor at Albright Stonebridge Group, and previously was Verizon's senior vice president of public policy and corporate responsibility.

o Study: Dramatic Rise in E-Gifting to Boost 2013 Gift Card Sales

Arlington, Va. -- A major increase in e-gifting is expected to push sales of gift cards to more than $118 billion in 2013, up 8% from a year ago, according to new research from Arlington-based advisory firm CEB. The study found that revenue from e-gifting -- the practice of sending electronic gift cards -- will increase 10-fold this year to $3 billion, and should be around the $10 billion mark by 2016. The firm said the practice fills a niche for customers seeking to simultaneously buy and send gifts to recipients they may not see in person over the holidays. At the same time, however, CEB said that new peer-to-peer (P2P) services from banks and companies such as PayPal may eventually begin to cut into gift card volume.
