o Amazon Web Services to Open Offices in Herndon, Add 500 Jobs
Herndon, Va. -- Amazon Web Services (AWS), a unit of online retailer Amazon.com that offers IT infrastructure services, plans to open new offices in Herndon that ultimately will house 500 new employees, Fairfax County officials announced on Wednesday. The news comes a day after the company said it had become the first major cloud provider to win federal security approval to offer cloud services under the government's Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program (FedRAMP). The Fairfax County Economic Development Authority (FCEDA) worked with the Virginia Economic Development Partnership to help secure the project, which will be supported by a $500,000 grant from the Governor's Opportunity Fund. In addition, Amazon will receive an unspecified amount of funding and services from the Virginia Department of Business Assistance to support local recruitment and training activities. "We look forward to putting more than 500 Virginians to work in Fairfax County," said Teresa Carlson, AWS's vice president of worldwide public sector.

o Chantilly-Based DSC Lands $50 Million Investment from Saudi Firm
Chantilly, Va. -- Digital Signal Corp. (DSC), a Chantilly-based developer of facial recognition and identity management tools, said on Wednesday it has landed a new $50 million investment from Saudi Arabia's Technology Control Corp. (TCC). TCC has the option to increase its investment by another $60 million over the next year. Digial Signal plans to use the funding to expand its sales and marketing, distribution and manufacturing activities, as well as to establish international headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland. "We believe that DSC's technologies comprise a near term multi-billion dollar opportunity in the Middle East market and multiples of that worldwide," said Bejad Alharbi, the founder and chairman of TCC. DSC now has raised nearly $100 million since its incpeiton, with previous backers including Columbia Capital, Novak Biddle Venture Partners, Silverhaze Partners, Paladin Capital Group and City Light Capital.

o Charlottesville-Based RKG Acquires Seattle's Nine By Blue
Charlottesville, Va. -- RKG, a Charlottesville-based provider of digital and search marketing services, said on Wednesday it has acquired Seattle-based Nine By Blue, a software and consulting firm founded by Google veteran Vanessa Fox. Financial terms of the cash and stock deal were not disclosed. Nine By Blue will operate as RKG Seattle, with its core search analytics and diagnostics software, known as Blueprint, becoming part of RKG's offerings. Fox is known as the creator of Google's Webmaster Central and helped launch sitemaps.org. She will take on the newly created role of chief product officer. RKG offers a range of digital and search services, and is one of Google's largest independent paid search agencies in terms of billings under management.

o Columbia-Based Fortress International Lands $6M Credit Facility
Columbia, Md. -- Fortress International Group, a Columbia-based provider of consulting and construction services for specialized facilities such as data centers, call centers and network operation centers, said it has secured a new $6 million credit facility through Bridge Bank. The news followed a $1.5 million deal to acquire the data center integration services business of Sterling-based Arvato Digital Services. "This line of credit provides an additional source of liquidity for our investments and working capital requirements," said CEO Anthony Angelini. Fortress also said it has restructured the promissory note held by Gerard Gallagher, its president and COO. The move reduces the outstanding principle amount by $307,000 (or approximately 14%) to $1.9 million.

o PayPal to Roll Out Service in RadioShack Stores Nationwide
San Jose, Calif. -- With plans to move more heavily into traditional offline stores, PayPal, the online payments arm of eBay, has announced a new nationwide partnership with consumer electronics retailer RadioShack. Reuters reported that the company plans to roll out its service at all of RadioShack's more than 4,000 U.S. locations later this month, with customers able to skip store lines by paying for their purchases through a mobile app. The move comes following a recent test run at some Jamba Juice locations in California. PayPal said it is hoping to make a large push into brick-and-mortar stores, with plans to launch in more than 2 million physical locations by year's end. "Swiping a card in a store is not hard," said David Marcus, the president of PayPal. "We really have to bring a lot of value to consumers to change that behavior."
