o Redwood Shores-Based Oracle Acquires Responsys in $1.5 Billion Deal

Redwood Shores, Calif. -- Oracle, the Redwood Shores-based back-office software giant, on Friday agreed to acquire San Bruno-based Responsys, developer of a relationship-based marketing platform, in a deal valued at $1.5 billion. Oracle will pay $27 a share for the company, which it will operate in conjunction with Eloqua in its Marketing Cloud. The combination, the company said, will allow CMOs supporting industries with B2C or B2B business models from a single platform. The deal is expected to close by mid-2014. "When combined with the full Oracle Customer Experience Cloud, for the first time, companies will be empowered to orchestrate individualized experiences that extend from marketing, to commerce, to sales, to service, to support," said Thomas Kurian, executive vice president of Oracle Development.

o Study: Dramatic Rise in E-Gifting to Boost 2013 Gift Card Sales

Arlington, Va. -- A major increase in e-gifting is expected to push sales of gift cards to more than $118 billion in 2013, up 8% from a year ago, according to new research from advisory firm CEB. The study found that revenue from e-gifting -- the practice of sending electronic gift cards -- will increase 10-fold this year to $3 billion, and should be around the $10 billion mark by 2016. The firm said the practice fills a niche for customers seeking to simultaneously buy and send gifts to recipients they may not see in person over the holidays. At the same time, however, CEB said that new peer-to-peer (P2P) services from banks and companies such as PayPal may eventually begin to cut into gift card volume.
